Writing about heartache isn’t always easy, especially from a Christian perspective. Writing about purposeful sin also is not easy for a Christian author, yet in real life, Christians choose sin every single day.
That’s why I chose to include an unplanned, teen pregnancy in my novel When Waves Break. As the daughter of a pastor, Eve Nicholas was raised on the teachings of the Bible, but in the free love era, she is torn between “right” and “right now.” In the end, she finds herself pregnant and alone. But with the help of her loving and forgiving family, Eve overcomes her situation and becomes an amazing mother for her daughter.
Eve’s twin sister, Juliette, also faces demons when she is sexually assaulted by a date. She struggles with feelings of worthlessness, of ruin, of questioning just what “free love” is supposed to mean. Again, as with her sister, their family helps her to rally and she discovers that God did not abandon her the night she was attacked.
In the real world outside of books, we, too, fight temptation and demons. We make poor choices every single day or poor choices are made against us. They may not have life-long consequences, but they certainly can. Alcohol, sex, lies, deception, and more all happen even in the most devout of households. Being a follower of Christ does not make us immune to these things. They just give us hope for when they do happen.
And my hope, as an author, is to present these scenarios to the reader so they can see that despite their mistakes, sins, and problems, God will still love them through it. Even if the people in their lives turn from them, God will never give up and leave them. We are unworthy, but God has said we are beyond worthy.
I have made my fair share of mistakes in life, as we all have, and I find it a great comfort to see when others–even fictitious others–also struggle in their walk with God and come out with a stronger faith and more determined resolve to rise above the hurt and heartache and give God all the glory He deserves.
One summer, one night, one mistake, and everything changes for Eve and Juliette Nicholas.
For the Nicholas twins, life is just beginning, until one summer of misguided love forces the twins to doubt everything they’ve ever believed. Eve and Juliette are the daughters of a preacher, raised to hold love in high esteem, although they may disagree on how to share it. As high school graduation looms, they must question the cost of love, and what it may mean for their futures.
The summer of 1968 is one of change for both the Nicholas twins and the nation. With Martin Luther King, Jr.’s speech fresh in everyone’s minds, racial tensions are high and threaten to shake the very foundation that once held the twins together. Through it all, will the bond that Eve and Juliette share be broken? Can love truly endure all things? Or will their mistakes always haunt them?
Set during a time of racial instability, When Waves Break sheds light on the equality and redemption we all have in Christ.
