My characters in A Fallen Sparrow: A Novel of the American Revolution don’t just endure a war. They endure loss and physical injury. They endure mental and emotional suffering.
Worst, they sometimes feel hopeless.
We look back with rose-colored glasses. Heroic George Washington couldn’t help but win. The hubris of the British inevitably brought them down.
No, it wasn’t like that at all. We fought against the biggest superpower of the day. Yes, Britain made mistakes, but they also won battles. If it hadn’t been for the French bottling up the Chesapeake at just the right time…
Men like George Washington, Henry Knox, and Daniel Morgan knew that they could win only with the aid of Providence. And looking back, we know that’s exactly what happened. God turned the tide of war for the Americans. Multiple times.
In my story, my characters don’t see the end like we do. They are in the middle. What if tyranny continues? They must choose to serve God knowing their lives may continue to be hard. They might live their entire lives under the thumb of the redcoats and the British Crown.
There is nothing new under the sun. As Christians, we are first and foremost citizens of heaven. Only secondly citizens of our native land. I love my country and you do too. It hurts sometimes to see what we see. And it can feel hopeless.
If you read my book, I hope you take comfort from it. And draw courage. There is a godly courage that stands for right even when the rest bow the knee to Baal.
The Lord sees. He sees every fallen sparrow.
A Fallen Sparrow: A Novel of the American Revolution is book three of the Russell family series. But it can be enjoyed as a stand-alone.
It was all Samuel Adams’s fault.
Ruth Haynes uses the pen name Honorius when she writes for her father’s newspaper. Boston has changed beyond recognition, and her Loyalist views soon get her in trouble. With war looming, what will their family do?
Jonathan Russell hides a guilty secret. The Battle of Bunker’s Hill sweeps him and his Shenandoah Valley family into the war. The unthinkable happens, and he’s forced to deal with both his grief—and his guilt.
Lieutenant Robert Shirley is summoned by his godmother and introduced to the Earl of Dartmouth, who charges him to gather intelligence in Boston. He is horrified but must obey.
Gritty, realistic, and rich with scriptural truth, this story features Dr. Joseph Warren, Major John André, Henry Knox, and Lt. Col. Banastre Tarleton.
