When people over sixteen years old are placed at the kiddie table during the holiday season because of lack of space, it is thought of as an insult. The “older” guests feel insulted that they can’t be a part of the adult conversation. However, the kiddie table might not be such a bad place to be. You may find childlike faith in the children and you may also see some of it within yourself. Finding enjoyment, even while seemingly being humbled, can bring many rewards during this life.
If Jesus would have been placed in that position at a party, he would have sat down immediately and joined the young children’s conversations. He probably would have asked them questions and really listened to their perspectives. He even said to let the little children come to him and not to hinder them for their childlike faith, hope, and belief is what the kingdom of heaven is all about. And, it is that same childlike faith that is key to entering heaven—a childlike faith in the love, compassion, and mercy of Jesus.
When you really listen to children, you can often hear divine wisdom coming out of their tiny mouths. It’s as if their hope and optimism clears a path for God’s wisdom to come through.
When people remember to seek this humble spirit, maybe they’ll even volunteer to sit at the kiddie table during a celebration. Or better yet, the host might figure out a way to incorporate both tables into one so that everyone can benefit from the hope and wisdom that children just may bring to the celebration.
Without faith it is impossible to please God, for whoever would draw near to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him. ~ Hebrews 11:6
I am one who agrees wholeheartedly with this “kiddie table” post. Personally, I always seek out any opportunity there is to spend time with a group of children. They frequently offer insight and a fresh perspective to issues that “grown-ups” complicate unduly!
