I grew up in coastal Virginia, which also happens to be historic Virginia. Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown were visited every year on field trips at school. I’ve always been fascinated by colonial times. A couple of years ago, while visiting my daughter at the Coast Guard base in Yorktown, once again I took a walk through its historic streets. As I ambled down Nelson street toward Main Street I passed Thomas Nelson’s house.
My imagination took hold and I could almost see Thomas and his wife sitting in the garden over a cup of tea. The gardens are gone now of course, but I could nearly see blooms and the edges of a boxwood maze. What would they think if they could have seen me in my blue jeans, blouse, and sandals? And so my Yorktown Christmas Time Travel Novella series was born.
Book one of the series tells the story of Max who comes forward in time from Colonial Yorktown. Garrett is book two of the series and follows Garrett as he finds himself transported back to Colonial Yorktown.
Garrett arrives in 1769 in modern clothes with his cell phone. I got my first cell phone back in 1997 because my husband and I moved to a rural county. Our oldest was eleven years old, the twins were one, and our suburban was eighteen. Praise God that first phone didn’t get much use since it was really for emergencies only! Now-a-days I use my phone for many things from pictures, to email, to music. When I was planning the second Yorktown time travel book I really wanted Garrett to have his phone with him because, who wouldn’t want a picture of the real colonial Yorktown! It was a hoot to imagine what day to day life would be like for a modern person used to technology at his fingertips forced to live in a place where the power is never on.
