And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. ~ Philippians 4:8
After watching the presidential debate last night, I really want to think about what is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, and admirable. In general, we have gotten far away from those qualities. Lies are heard more than truth. Pride is honored instead of humility. Things that feel right are considered wrong and things that feel wrong are considered right. Lies and gossip get attention instead of purity and goodness. Racism and hatred are front and center where love deserves to be.
But…I refuse to give up. I want to think of positive things. I want to think about excellent things. I want to believe in the good that is still in the world even though it doesn’t get the full attention that it deserves.
This past weekend, I saw the movie Sully and was fully impressed. I was impressed with doing the right thing to help many others. I noticed people helping others in a huge team effort. Not just the heroics of the pilot but also the heroics of the entire crew on the plane and the passengers…as well as the compassionate air traffic controller…and the many first responders…
That’s the way it should be. People helping people when the going gets rough. Of course, we also have to remember to help and encourage people when things are okay because things can always be improved.
Yes, I want to think about such wonderful and beautiful things…not lies and spin of candidates and the media. Although I also want to remember to pray or the not-so-wonderful viewpoints and things of the world.
