Everything is wearisome,
more than one can express;
the eye is not satisfied with seeing,
the ear not filled up with hearing.
What has been is what will be,
what has been done is what will be done,
and there is nothing new
under the sun. ~ Ecclesiastes 1:8-9 CJB
The world and everyday life can be wearisome. There are many problems in the world. And today, we can see most of the problems around the world live in our living rooms. It’s good to be aware, but it’s not good to have feelings of dread all day long. Our eyes are not only open to good and evil, they are open in 4K vision.
It’s wearisome. It’s exhausting.
But that doesn’t mean we give up. As a disciple of Christ, we are called to be salt—a catalyst of change—in the world. We are called to do things—to help. But we can only really help in our corner of the world—our wheelhouse. We can’t do everything. We can’t be everywhere. So being aware of everything at all times isn’t helpful, and it’s often depressing and debilitating.
However, hope prevails.
We can do what we can in our homes.
We can do what we can in our neighborhoods.
We can do what we can in our workplace.
We can do what we can daily.
Some people make tremendous splashes in the world and effect change in thousands of people. Many people only make a small spot of contact in the water…but…even a small stone in a big pond makes ripples that flow out far beyond one person’s reach.
Serving in small ways makes a grand difference too.
Don’t just say you’re a Christian. Be a disciple. Follow Jesus and help people in small ways each day, even if it’s only in a small corner of the world. Good deeds and good news spread.
A disciple wakes up each morning and says, “Lord, what do you want me to do today, right here and right now?”
